Digital communication is a great way to stay in touch with friends, family, co-workers and—of course—RetailMeNot, your favorite savings destination. Unfortunately, spammers are getting more and more sophisticated on how to spoof trusted brands and trick you into giving them your attention, or worse, your money.
If you receive a RetailMeNot email, how can you tell at-a-glance if it’s really from us?
1) Make Sure You Address the Email Address. Sure, the sender name may say RetailMeNot. But if the email address in brackets next to it has a domain name that doesn’t end in retailmenot.com, it might not be from us—proceed to the next steps to narrow down if it’s fake or real.
2) Honk! At RetailMeNot, We Brake for Branding. Our emails to you will have our name at the top of the email as well as the bottom. (We admit we’re a little proud of ourselves.) Some email scammers have gotten annoyingly good at imitating our branding. But an email that claims to be from RetailMeNot but doesn’t have RetailMeNot branding at the top AND bottom? Now that’s just wrong.
3) Before You Click That Link, Hover on Over. If you hover your mouse over any link in our emails, the URL will clearly be a RetailMeNot.com one. Hover your mouse over a link in the suspicious email. If that link doesn’t clearly end with “retailmenot.com,” definitely don’t click it!
