ADVICE FROM A MILITARY WIFE
There are more discounts than ever
There are more discounts for military today than in the past, says Jean Kim, of Military.com. She credits that to the greater awareness of military personnel’s service to the country. Even companies that might not offer discounts may be involved in raising funds toward a charity that benefits current or retired military members.
It never hurts to ask
“We all love to save money,” says Kim, so even if a specific retailer doesn’t advertise that it offers a discount, it might. Even a smaller local store might do something. As Kim points out, “the worst thing that anyone will say is, ‘I’m sorry, we don’t have one,’ and maybe if enough people ask, the company will offer one in the future.”
Read the fine print
It’s smart to confirm a military discount in case a specific franchise does not participate—and Kim adds that if you have time, call a few stores nearest you, as discounts may vary by location.
The benefits for the stores
Not only is a retailer showing appreciation for members of its community, but offering military discounts makes good business sense. “You’re creating brand loyalty,” says Kim. “Military families tend to be very, very loyal.”
The benefits for the families
“[Military families] are like any other family out there, but we do tend to have some challenges such as deployment and separations, and it’s surprising how something so simple as a military discount can provide comfort and stress relief—a sense that a business understands me and our situation,” says Kim. So if you’re a business owner, keep in mind that this small thank you can make a huge difference in someone’s day.
