Being that I’m a mom, Mother’s Day is—not surprisingly—one of my favorite holidays. One the things I love most is a handmade card from my 7-year-old daughter, but a little prezzie to celebrate one’s mom-hood is always nice too! All these lovely goodies are available for under $80.
If Mom likes her tunes, she’ll instantly fall in love with the cool vintage-style Crosley Radio Songbird ($39.95 at Drugstore.com). It’s a radio, alarm clock and MP3 speaker in one! Special features include a digital AM/FM tuner, headphone jack and the option to power the device via battery or an AC adapter power. The radio is available in five eye-catching colors, including pink, orange and turquoise.
A handprint from someone special might just bring tears to her eyes! Magic Prints ($24.95 at Hallmark) is a collection that allows kids to create an imprint of their hands with no muss, fuss or mess (the ink is nontoxic, of course). Display the prints on magnets, frames or journals. Larger versions have space for a handprint, photo and a sweet sentiment.
Candles in cool packaging always make a nice gift, especially for the mom who has everything. Unfortunately, they often cost a fortune, so I was thrilled to find the candles from Paddywax. There are 13 different collections of hand-poured soy candles, all with lovely fragrances. I really like everything I’ve seen from Paddywax, but if I had to pick one candle, it would be the Mandarin Basil Candle ($20 at Paddywax), which comes in a simple ceramic pot that will mesh well with most decor. The fragrance is out of this world. It smells like a fresh mandarin orange with a touch of spice. I generally don’t gravitate toward fruity scents, but I love this one so much that I keep it on my desk so I can enjoy it all day long.
Treat the lady of the hour to a Turkish cotton 69-by-40-inch Aegean Fouta Towel ($52 from Nine Space). This is the perfect gift for the tough customer because it has so many uses. Mom can use this lovely piece, which becomes softer and more absorbent each time you wash it, as a beach blanket, beach wrap, tablecloth and, of course, as a towel!
Couch Potato Mom
She’ll rush home to throw off her work clothes and settle into the kimono-style Organic Cotton Jersey Knit Robe ($76 at Pure Fiber) for the evening. She’ll wish for a lottery win just so she can lounge around in this silky garment and eat bonbons all day. One size fits most, and the robe is available in eight colors.
While she’s getting the kids to bed, she’ll daydream about snuggling up on the couch for some “me time” with the Pure Bliss Quilted Sofa Comforter ($49.99 at Brookstone). This deep pink blanket is double-sided, which gives her the choice of two super-soft fabrics to enjoy. Bonus: The reversible built-in foot pocket keeps toes toasty warm.
If your mom doesn’t have a mat for her home workouts, now is the perfect time to get her one! My favorite is the Premium Sage Lily Yoga Mat ($29.98 at Gaiam). It’s a soft green color and emblazoned with pretty lily flowers. What’s really great is its thickness. Five millimeters provides serious cushioning, so even the most delicate folks can use it with comfort.
If she needs something flattering to work out in and could possibly benefit from a few words of encouragement, she’ll love the Free, Fast, Fun/Eco Performance Tank ($25 at Believe I Am). This comfortable top is made of blended bamboo, which is naturally antibacterial and moisture-wicking. Believe I Am is an athlete-designed collection of comfortable pieces featuring words of empowerment like “I Am Strong,” “I Am Beautiful” and, of course, “Free, Fast & Fun,” which stands for “Run Free, Run Fast and Have Fun.”
I don’t normally include fragrances in my gift guides because I think perfume preference is really personal, but I fell in love with indie fragrance house Demeter’s Rain ($19 at DermStore). This light fragrance smells just like the air after a spring rain, so the scent is rejuvenating and uplifting to wear. If you can’t imagine her liking the smell of a spring rain, why not try Laundromat or Paperback!
If she’s a jewelry girl, you can’t go wrong with Blue Nile. The fine jewelry retailer is known for its diamonds and such, but I found some lovely choices for those of us on a budget! My favorites are the Mini Sparkle Circle Pendant ($35), Lucky Wishbone Pendant ($40) and Dew Drop Threader Earrings ($45).
Your mother may love her laptop, but if she has nothing cool to carry it in, get her the Essential Neoprene Tote ($14.87 at Amazon; regularly $55). Her precious device will be protected by the built-in zippered laptop sleeve, and she can store her reading materials and other essentials in the two additional interior pockets. The neoprene fabric is stain-resistant, hand-washable and forgiving—in case she needs to jam extra stuff in the bag from time to time.
If Mom is a bit edgier, consider a handmade Leather Cuff Bracelet ($59) from Southern California glass artists Cocoon Designs. There are lots of options available for the color of both the stone and the leather. The stones are secured with delicate silver wire, which gives the cuff a soft, feminine touch.
If a beautiful bouquet is what brings a smile to her face, take a look at the Deluxe Spring Lilies ($39.98; add a vase for an extra $6.99–$9.99). The stargazer lilies are simply gorgeous.
Share inspiring and honest tales of motherhood courtesy of photographer Ali Smith’s Momma Love ($45). Granted, I’m a little biased because my daughter and I are featured in the book, but that aside, this is a beautifully photographed collection filled with personal stories and stunning photographs. It was also just published thanks to Kickstarter, so this book is a true entrepreneurial success story!
