For parents, picture day is a huge deal. These photos will last forever, whether they’re placed on the fridge, in the yearbook or in photo albums; in other words, creating a timeless look is essential. Kiddos see picture day a little differently, however. Aside from the first day of school, this is the one occasion in which they want to dress to impress, and thus their number one priority will be rocking the latest threads. So in the spirit of compromise, here are six looks your kid will want to wear without having your parenting skills come into question.
On your sweet girl’s big day, put her in something bright and cheery—something that will give her the confidence to smile pretty. This subtle animal print is definitely trendy but won’t totally age the photograph when she looks at it 20 years from now. A coordinating cardigan adds a classic touch that pulls the look together. And don’t forget the bling. Besides Easter, there are few opportunities to utilize a fun headband, so accessorize accordingly.

Here’s the thing: Your little boy will only sit still and let you dress him for so long. Take full advantage of that tiny window and snap adorable pics of his miniature-man outfit while you still can. Seriously, is there anything cuter than this elbow-patch sweater with camouflage pants? Sure, the rustic merino topper is a bit expensive for a tot but hello! That’s what coupons are for.

This ensemble perfectly illustrates an ideal middle ground: You have an embellished sweater from an “it” store to satisfy the tween and a traditional collar popping out from underneath to please Mom or Dad. With this age group, it’s all about balance. For extra cool points, let her wear this plaid skater skirt in a matching hue. The killer combo has Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” written all over it.

Good luck getting a pubescent boy to wear anything halfway decent, well, ever. This Tommy Hilfiger shirt is the best of two worlds. It’s preppy but with a slightly rebellious edge. The plaid faux tie gives off an air of “boarding school gone wrong” but is still straight-edge enough that you won’t feel reluctant to send off prints to the grandparents. Not that anyone will even see what he wears on his lower half, but canvas straight-leg pants most likely fall into neutral territory.

Abercrombie & Fitch has recently made some big changes to its design aesthetic. Gone is the moose-emblazoned merchandise, and in its place are surprisingly chic pieces. A fleece jacket over a floral jumpsuit says, “Yeah, I look pretty awesome,” without trying too hard. Now, parents, don’t be shocked if the bomber jacket magically disappears from the photo; teenagers have a way of shedding clothing as the day goes on. Worst-case scenario, this standout bib necklace will add some polish and balance to those bare shoulders.

Let me guess. Your son wants to wear a hoodie on school-picture day? The correct answer, of course, is “absolutely not.” Fortunately, American Eagle’s button-down shirt is a win-win. It’s plaid, it buttons, there’s no hood, and he can choose from a variety of shades to regain some (read: minor) control of the matter. Again, who cares what he wears on bottom, but last I checked, skinny jeans are still in. (Thank goodness.)
